The Farm Painting
By Ryza Isabel Gloria
Artist’s note: The Farm Painting (“báhay kúbo” – Filipino stilt field house)
This is the largest painting I’ve ever created. It was a small request I did for my mother to decorate the living room. It was inspired by scenes of farmland in the Philippines, where I was born. Each subject in the painting was planned, with the painting’s final composition in mind: the banana trees behind the kubo, the carabao, goats, chicken, the tricycle behind the tree, etc. Ultimately, I was just having fun with this painting - it took me two years to stop modifying and improving it. Even though it is my most detailed painting, I am not so proud of it because I don’t feel as though it evokes any emotions. But I do hope it does evoke some nostalgia for any Filipino readers.
