Society Spotlight: UC Indian Association

By Peter Searles

The University of Canberra Indian Association (UCIA) taps into the vibrant network of Indian students here at UC. The club is also managed by a hardworking and energetic executive team. So, it’s no surprise that UCIA was highly commended in the category of ‘Cultural Club of the Year’ at the UClifex Student Experience Awards last year.

I caught up with Jacob, the club’s PR manager, and learned that gathering UC students together, whether they are Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Napalese, Bhutanese or other nationality, is at the core of the work UCIA are doing. Jacob explained that when students are brought together and form strong community bonds, all individuals in the club are empowered through the network of contacts and mutual support on offer.

2024 looks to be another strong year for UCIA. Kicking off on the 2nd of March with a celebration of Holi, the festival of colours. Attendees to the event will be invited to dress up and join in the throwing of colours, as well as enjoying a Bollywood night with music and dancing.

Further social events planned this semester include a movie night on the 5th of April, and an end of semester party on the 16th of May. For this semester’s sports event, members and friends will be invited to join a game of basketball on the 16th of April. Jacob expects this to be a popular event, after the huge success of the basketball game UCIA held last semester.

Jacob explained that Indian students in Australia have a natural affinity for forming community networks. Because of this, it’s not unusual for UCIA events to attract ANU students, and others from outside the immediate UC community.

UCIA’s connections go further than just university students too. On the 15th of March, the club will host a meet and greet with Gopal Baglay, the High Commissioner of India. Members will have the opportunity to question Mr Baglay on issues that affect their lives such as employment opportunities for those on student VISAs, and other opportunities to put their skills to use in advancing their professional lives.

During our discussion, Jacob reminded me that UCIA is a club that is open to all. So, keep an eye out for their upcoming events, and become a member through the UCX website to take advantage of all that the UCIA community has to offer.
