3 new Canberra bars to check out
By Madeleine Johns
1. Assembly, Lonsdale Street Braddon
The new kid on the block in Braddon is Assembly. Located on Lonsdale Street, it features a sunny beer garden with plenty of space to hang out. The interior of Assembly is huge: with plenty of tables and booth seating, a highlight is the large concrete slab bar, where there’s a wide array of beers, wine, spirits and cocktails.
The kitchen offers modern pub food for lunch and dinner, as well as a breakfast menu and cold brew coffee. Come summertime, the beer garden will be full to bursting, with a beautiful big tree in the middle making you forget you’re in the middle of Braddon.
2. Fenway Public House, Bradley Street Woden
Woden’s newest bar and restaurant is Fenway Public House, situated on the newly revamped Bradley Street Dining Precinct. Fenway is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and has an extensive drinks menu.
You can choose to eat snacks and have drinks in the more casual seating area around the bar and towards the back, with sporting events showing on the TV screens; or sit in the sunken-floor restaurant area which often has live bands playing. At the front of Fenway Public, there is a glass-walled atrium area with small tables and bar seats, as well as booths and tables.
Fenway is warm and inviting and just what the doctor ordered for Woden and all the inner-south-siders who were desperate for a new locale with something on offer for everyone.
3. The Howling Moon, The Rex Hotel Braddon
The Howling Moon is Canberra’s latest (and currently only) rooftop bar. Located on top of The Rex Hotel in Braddon, The Howling Moon has spectacular views across Canberra on offer while you wine and dine.
The rooftop bar has glass covering it so it can be enjoyed year-round, even in the middle of Canberra’s famously merciless winters. Watch the gorgeous sunset or see Canberra’s lights glowing at night from the dark, all while enjoying snacks and share platters or sipping on beer, wine and signature cocktails.
