The Equalizer 3 – Film Review
By Uzair Mustafa
In The Equalizer 3, the saga continues with Robert McCall, previously a formidable government assassin, now living a more subdued life in Southern Italy. However, his pursuit of peace is short-lived as he discovers that his newfound companions are ensnared by the tyranny of local crime lords. Embracing his past expertise, McCall becomes an unwavering protector, challenging the mafia to shield the oppressed.
This instalment distinguishes itself within the action genre, not relying on the stunt-driven dynamics of films like John Wick or Mission Impossible but rather evoking the atmospheric tension of a Batman comic. Denzel Washington, in his portrayal of McCall, embodies a figure both compassionate towards the righteous and chillingly merciless to his adversaries.
Antoine Fuqua’s directorial brilliance, paired with Robert Richardson’s cinematography, elevates Washington’s on-screen aura, an effect magnified on Dendy Cinemas’ expansive screens. Even the simple unveiling of the Sony and Columbia Pictures logo elicits a palpable sense of anticipation.
While the film excels in character-driven performances, it momentarily stumbles with a slightly delayed exposition of McCall’s mission. However, once the mission is clarified, the story is anchored in deep emotion rather than groundbreaking plots. The ensemble cast, representing the town’s residents, captures the audience’s empathy, particularly in light of their suffering under antagonist Vincent Quaranta.
The Equalizer 3 is a refreshing take within its genre, emphasizing a performance-driven narrative over high-octane stunts. Its character-focused storytelling elevates it, celebrating the essence of an action-packed drama enhanced by genuine human connections.
